On seeing each other,
we collided with enough force
to knock the breath
from my lungs,
so that I could still feel the hug
when you let me go.
And I held you
as hard as I could,
a hand reaching up
for the back of your neck,
the other arm wrapped
around broad shoulders.
I forgot to draw breath,
even when I could,
having dismissed it for the moment
as immaterial, unnecessary.
